Minami Katsu Sets New Record at the LPGA Shanghai Tournament

SHANGHAI – Japanese golfer Minami Katsu shone with a stellar performance, achieving an impressive course record with a score of 61, eleven under par, this Friday at the LPGA tournament in Shanghai. Katsu, with remarkable precision, finished the day with a two-stroke lead at the halfway point of the championship. The prominent Japanese golfer achieved six birdies in the first nine holes. After a bogey on the 10th hole, Katsu recovered with six additional birdies at the Qizhong Garden Golf Club. With this performance, the 27-year-old player reached a cumulative score of 13 under par, aiming for her first victory on the circuit.

It was an almost perfect round, with some luck, but overall very good. My personal best was 10 under par, so today I set a new record.

Katsu, who achieved a total of 12 birdies, revealed that he focused on the basics, without thinking about records. His exceptional performance surpassed the previous course record by one stroke, set by Sei Young Kim last year.

Honestly, I’m very happy with the record I made today. Obviously, we still have two days of play left, so there’s probably no celebration. I’ll try to keep it simple.

Ina Yoon placed second with 68 strokes, totaling 11 under par. Jenny Bae and Lindy Duncan, both Americans, shared third place with 67 strokes. Jenny Bae, who aspired to the lead with 13 under par, had a complicated finish on the 18th hole. A shot in the bunker and another in the water resulted in a triple bogey, finishing her round with 69 strokes. Her performance included eight birdies, two bogeys, and the triple bogey. The leader of the previous day, Arpichaya Yubol, recorded 71 strokes and was in fifth place with 9 under par, tied with Somi Lee (67) and Jeeno Thitikul (70). This tournament in Shanghai is the first of a series of five events in Asia, including two weeks in South Korea, and competitions in Malaysia and Japan.
