John Daly sets a new negative record on the PGA Tour Champions

Sioux City, S.D. – John Daly etched his name in the PGA Tour Champions record books this Friday, but for the least desired reason. The golfer recorded an astonishing 19 on the 12th hole, a par 5, during the Sanford International.

This mark surpasses his previous personal record by one stroke. Daly had scored an 18 on the 6th hole, also a par 5, at the 1998 Bay Hill Invitational, after sending his 3-wood shot into the water six consecutive times.

The information provided from the Minnehaha Country Club, where the tournament is being held, was not entirely accurate due to the absence of a laser system to record each stroke.

According to the available details, Daly sent his first shot into the rough and, subsequently, his next seven shots ended up in the water. Finally, he managed to overcome the water hazard, reaching the rough. His seventeenth shot reached the edge of the green, and he managed an “up-and-down” to finish the hole with 19.

This score exceeds by three strokes the previous PGA Tour Champions record, shared by three players, the most recent Bruce Crampton at the 1996 Greater Grand Rapids Open.

Unlike his previous mark at Bay Hill, where he reacted with a birdie on the next hole, on this occasion Daly settled for a par on the 13th hole at Minnehaha.

Daly finished the round with a total of 88 strokes.

His highest score on the PGA Tour was a 90 in the second round of the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook in 2014, where he was struggling with technical issues and scored a 12 on the 16th hole.

Daly shared the day with Stephen Ames and Ángel Cabrera.
