Ángel Hidalgo Ties Birdie Record at the Irish Open

Straffan, Ireland – Spanish golfer Ángel Hidalgo equaled a European Tour record by making 12 birdies in a single round, climbing to second place with an impressive 63, nine under par, during the third round of the Irish Open on Saturday. Meanwhile, Frenchman Adrien Saddier took the lead in the tournament with a round of 68. The favorite Rory McIlroy also stayed in contention, signing a bogey-free round with a 68. The world number 2 is four strokes behind Saddier’s total, who accumulates a total of 15 under par (201) at The K Club. McIlroy shares fourth position with Joakim Lagergren, who lost the lead after a round of 73. Lagergren’s performance included four birdies, three bogeys, and a double bogey. Alfredo García-Heredia is in third position, three strokes behind the leader, after scoring two eagles in his round of 67. Hidalgo’s outstanding round included seven consecutive birdies, finishing one shot behind Saddier. The Spaniard became the ninth player to achieve a dozen birdies in a single round of a European Tour event.
