SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda – Adam Hadwin leads the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, maintaining his position after a standout performance amidst windy conditions. Hadwin, seeking to secure his place on the PGA Tour, completed the day with a card of 66 strokes, five under par, on the Port Royal course, giving him a one-stroke lead heading into the weekend. Currently ranked 147th in the FedEx Cup standings, Hadwin needs a good performance to move into the top 100 next week at the RSM Classic and thus retain his card for next year. The 38-year-old Canadian golfer, who has won one title on the PGA Tour, as well as having participated in the Presidents Cup on two occasions, failed to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time in his career. With a total of 131 strokes, 11 under par, Hadwin demonstrated consistency after his start with 65 strokes on Thursday.

I was a little more in trouble than yesterday, I didn’t hit it as well. I was a little off at the beginning… Just a little off. I didn’t have the same feeling as yesterday, but I defended myself very well. Short game, putting, I made a lot of putts today.

Chandler Phillips and Braden Thornberry share second position. Max McGreevy and Noah Goodwin are at nine under par. McGreevy faced the most challenging wind conditions, playing at the end of Thursday and the beginning of Friday.

Being from Oklahoma and seeing a lot of wind in my life, I’ve seen good and bad gusts. You have to deal with that.

In winds that reached 26 mph, Hadwin recovered from a double bogey on the 13th hole, his fourth hole of the day, with an eagle from the rough on the 6th hole.

I thought about pushing it up there and getting to about 50, 60 meters from the green and just throwing it back at that pin. I thought as long as you kept it right of the bushes, you had about 50, 60 meters to work with. It came out perfect, the approach shot did it. You get a little lucky to do it, but I did exactly what I wanted.

This is Hadwin’s 299th appearance on the PGA Tour. His only PGA Tour victory was at the 2017 Valspar Championship. Tyler Watts, an 18-year-old high school senior from Huntsville, Alabama, is tied for 35th at 2-under after a round of 69 strokes. The player, who will join Tennessee, tied for 53rd at the Procore Championship in his other tour appearance. He earned a spot in this week’s tournament thanks to a sponsor exemption as the top player at the Men’s Elite Amateur Cup.
