Tommy Fleetwood Secures His Ryder Cup Spot Despite Defeat

Tommy Fleetwood, despite not securing his first victory on the PGA Tour, has secured his place on the European team for the Ryder Cup. The English golfer, who was leading the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee, on Sunday, with a one-stroke lead, had a disappointing finish. This prevented him from entering the playoff by one stroke and losing the opportunity to add a PGA Tour title to his international victories. The tiebreaker was won by Justin Rose, who has also secured a spot at Bethpage Black in New York for the event to be held from September 26 to 28.

Incredible to have these two back on the team! They bring so much both on and off the field. Let’s go!

Luke Donald, European Ryder Cup Captain
Fleetwood, who is preparing for his fourth consecutive appearance for Europe, expressed his pride on social media.

The top six golfers in the European team points standings as of August 24 will qualify for the team. McIlroy, Rose, and Fleetwood have already secured their qualification through points, and Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton, and Sepp Straka currently complete the top six. Shane Lowry, Rasmus Højgaard, Ludvig Åberg, and Viktor Hovland complete the top 10 and seem to be in good form to be selected by the captain if they do not obtain an automatic spot.
