McIlroy and Europe Celebrate Ryder Cup Victory
In Farmingdale, New York, Rory McIlroy found himself in the midst of euphoria. After predicting a victory at Bethpage Black, McIlroy’s comments became prophetic thanks to Shane Lowry’s birdie on the 18th hole. The celebration, however, began without him. Lowry, euphoric, joined the European crowd that acclaimed him. Jon Rahm embraced José María Olazábal, captain of the last team to win on foreign soil in 2012, who was moved. McIlroy lost his match against Scottie Scheffler and, for a moment, the biggest collapse in Ryder Cup history seemed possible. The United States rallied, bringing the competition closer to what was expected.McIlroy remained on the course, supporting Tyrrell Hatton and Robert MacIntyre. Even when Lowry secured the victory, he stayed present until the end of the match, which sealed the European triumph by 15-13.Obviously it was very close at the end. It was a bit stressful.
McIlroy
The European team exhibits remarkable cohesion. They celebrate each hole and match together, and support each other in difficult moments. This unity is manifested in the way they embrace, showing a brotherhood that goes beyond the professional. In recent years, the United States has had an advantage in talent. However, Europe has shown that chemistry, emotion, and precision, both on and off the field, are crucial. It’s good to be right. I’m not always right. I think when we won in Rome, things got going to try and do something that hadn’t been done in more than a decade. We believe a lot in our continuity.
McIlroy
European performance is attributed to factors that go beyond American control. Europe has shown that chemistry, emotion, and precision are as important as talent.Ryder Cup weeks are the best of our lives. I think those weeks we spend together are the ones we remember the most and the ones we appreciate the most for the time we spend together. That’s a big part of my captaincy, creating an environment where these guys are having the best weeks of their lives, honestly.
Donald
The level of professionalism he has shown us in the last four years… His attention to detail…
Jon Rahm
Donald worried about details such as the cracks in the room doors, the quality of the bedding, and the choice of shampoo. His goal is to create an environment conducive to the success of his players. The European team has struck a balance between tangible preparation and the perfection of the intangible. His communication skills…
McIlroy
I feel the power of this, the power of the group, who knows what it is, that ability to focus, the ability to want it a little more. The answer to your question is that I don’t know, apart from the badge and the guys, honestly. That’s all that matters, honestly, the badge and the guys.
Justin Rose
While Donald was finishing, McIlroy wiped away his tears. We will always remember this. We will always go down in history. Future generations will talk about this team tonight and what they did and how they were able to overcome one of the most difficult environments in all of sports and that’s what inspires me, that’s what Rory and these other 11 guys also understand.
