Ethan Fang Makes History: First American to Win the British Amateur in 18 Years

American golfer Ethan Fang, a student at Oklahoma State University, was crowned champion of the British Amateur this Saturday, defeating Irishman Gavin Tiernan in a close match at Royal St. George’s. Fang secured the victory with a birdie on the final hole, sealing a 1-up triumph and becoming the first American in 18 years to lift the trophy. The match, which remained tied for a large part of the game, saw Fang take a 2-up lead. However, Tiernan responded with two consecutive birdies, tying the score. The tension reached its peak on the 36th hole, where Fang, with an excellent approach, left the ball just 5 feet from the hole, securing the victory.

Probably one of the longest golf days I’ve played. I just made a really good shot on the last hole.

The last time an American won the British Amateur was in 2007, when Drew Weaver took the title. After his victory, Fang not only secured a place in next month’s British Open, but also an invitation to the Masters at Augusta National next year. The young golfer, who grew up near Dallas and played his first year at Cal, showed his mettle by remaining calm under pressure and executing two impeccable shots that allowed him to secure the decisive birdie. Fang, currently ranked number 7 in the amateur world ranking, could secure a place on the Walker Cup team to be held in September at Cypress Point. The next challenge for Fang will be the Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Playing the Masters and the Open Championship is going to be great. I had registered for a couple of amateur tournaments (this summer), but I think I’ll cancel them.
