David Puig Crowned Australian PGA Champion

The Spanish golfer David Puig has written his name in golf history by winning the Australian PGA Championship, joining the legend Seve Ballesteros as the only Spaniards to achieve this feat. Puig, with an outstanding performance at the Royal Queensland GC, demonstrated his skill by surpassing a competitive group of players. The young LIV Golf talent, 23 years old, stood out with consecutive birdies on holes two, three, and four, solidifying his lead and finishing Sunday with an impressive score of five under par. With a total of 18 under par, Puig beat Chinese Wenyi Ding by two strokes. The final round began with a large number of players seeking victory, but it was Puig who took the lead, showing great consistency and determination. With a solid game, the Spaniard (68, 67, 65, 66) managed to remain calm and secure the prize of 450,000 dollars. This triumph makes him the ninth international winner of the tournament in almost a century and the second since 1998. Puig followed in the footsteps of Ballesteros, who won the championship in 1981, demonstrating the influence of the legendary Spanish golfer.

“Being alongside Seve makes this even more special,” Puig commented, referring to the Spanish golf legend.

Puig also expressed his admiration for Ballesteros, highlighting his impact on Spanish golf and his desire to emulate his playing style. After joining the LIV circuit in 2022, Puig has participated in the DP World Tour and in the majors. Before the event in Brisbane, he committed to being a full member of the European circuit until 2026. Marc Leishman and Min Woo Lee also fought for the victory, but mistakes on the 14th hole and Puig’s birdie on the 13th gave him an advantage that he maintained until the end. Adam Scott finished in seventh place, while Nick Voke and Daniel Hillier also had outstanding performances. Leishman, with three consecutive third places, is still looking for his first major title in Australia.
