Charlie Woods Climbs in the Junior PGA Championship
Charlie Woods, son of golf legend Tiger Woods, positioned himself in the Junior PGA Championship competition with an impressive round of 66 strokes, six under par, in the second day of the tournament held in West Lafayette, Indiana.
After an initial performance with 70 strokes in the first round at the Kampen-Cosler Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, Woods achieved birdies on six of his first eight holes on Wednesday, completing the first half of the course in a remarkable 31, five under par.
In the second half, he added three birdies in the first six holes, reaching a total of nine under par in the championship, before suffering two consecutive bogeys that relegated him to seven under par.Currently, Woods is seven strokes behind the leader, Lunden Esterline, who is committed to Auburn for 2027. Max VanderMolen and Chase Yenser share second place at nine under par, with 36 holes left to play.
Woods, 16, failed to qualify for match play rounds at last week’s U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in Dallas. Now, he’s seeking one of the two automatic spots on the Junior Ryder Cup team, which will be awarded to the top two finishers this week.
In addition, there is the possibility of a captain’s selection, although the chances of Woods being chosen are low.
Student at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Florida, Woods won the AJGA Team TaylorMade Invitational in May. He has not yet announced his college commitment.
