Greyserman, Cauley, and Campbell Lead the Baycurrent Classic in Japan

In a remarkable opening day of the Baycurrent Classic in Japan, American golfers Max Greyserman, Bud Cauley, and Brian Campbell achieved an exceptional performance, signing scorecards of 67 strokes (-4) and sharing the top of the leaderboard. This tournament, the only one of its kind on the PGA Tour on Japanese soil, moves this year to the Yokohama Country Club, after having taken place east of Tokyo since 2019 under the name Zozo Championship. A group of eight players were one stroke behind the leaders, including Australian Adam Scott. Another seven competitors were two strokes away. Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, both members of the U.S. team that suffered defeat in the Ryder Cup, finished the round with a par of 71 strokes. The defending champion, Nico Echavarria of Colombia, completed his participation with a 70. Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, representing Japan, recorded a 72 in the first round. Greyserman, who last year was just one stroke away from victory, remembering his defeat on the 72nd hole against Echavarria, expressed his enthusiasm for competing in Japan.

I love playing in Japan. It’s a great culture, respectful people, respectful fans.

Greyserman described the first round as “very, very difficult” due to the strong winds. In addition, he acknowledged Echavarria’s performance, who seeks to revalidate his title.

Nico made it that week. So maybe he can make it this week.
