Steven Alker Takes the Lead at the Senior British Open
In the iconic Old Course at Sunningdale, Steven Alker showcased his skill with an impressive round of 63 strokes, seven under par. His performance included six birdies and an eagle, securing him the lead at the Senior British Open, the final major of the season on the PGA Tour Champions. Alker, who has triumphed twice in the Charles Schwab Cup and has nine titles in the PGA Tour Champions, seeks his second senior major, after his victory at the PGA Senior Championship in 2022. The New Zealander golfer leads by one stroke over Australian Mark Hensby. Defending champion K.J. Choi and Joe Durant are three strokes behind, with a score of 66.Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els are one stroke behind Choi and Durant’s group. Justin Leonard, who made the cut last week at the British Open at Royal Portrush, is among the players with 69 strokes.“I was efficient today. I hit the ball in the fairway when I needed to, my iron game was solid and I made some putts, especially on the back nine today, which kept the momentum going,” Alker commented. “You always need momentum. It’s a good first round for the Senior Open.”
