Toto Wolff: George Russell’s Renewal at Mercedes is “A Formality”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has assured that the negotiations to extend George Russell’s contract for next year are “a formality.” Despite the delay in confirming his presence for 2026, Wolff maintains an optimistic stance on the British driver’s future with the team. Mercedes has not yet announced its lineup for 2026, unlike other teams that have already defined their drivers. However, Russell is widely expected to continue with the team, along with his teammate, the young Kimi Antonelli. Russell has previously linked the delay in signing his contract to the possible arrival of Max Verstappen at Mercedes, who ultimately confirmed his stay at Red Bull.Wolff also emphasized the importance of discussing the smallest details to optimize Russell’s performance and structure his marketing obligations.“We clearly know what we expect from each other, what we want. It’s a formality,” Wolff stated at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Russell added that there is no rush to close the deal and that it will be finalized when the time is right. Wolff also expressed his support for Antonelli, who has had an irregular performance. The Mercedes boss reiterated his confidence in the young driver and noted that short-term results will not change the team’s long-term vision.“Toto and the team were very willing to work during the summer break to reach a resolution, but I wanted to take that time because those two weeks are very valuable to all of us,” Russell stated.
