Verstappen aims for the championship after dominating in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas – Max Verstappen, after the United States Grand Prix, has reduced the distance with the championship leader, Oscar Piastri, and now firmly believes in his chances of obtaining the title. The defending champion, who has achieved his third victory in the last four races, is only 40 points behind the leader. After finishing second behind Piastri in Zandvoort four races ago, Verstappen was 104 points behind the leader, which underscores the remarkable change that he and Red Bull have achieved in the last races.

I would tell him he was an idiot.

When asked what he would have said to someone at the Dutch Grand Prix if they had predicted he would be in the title fight in Austin, Verstappen responded firmly. The Dutch driver attributes this improvement to a better understanding of the car and the updates made. “We found a good form with the car. It’s that simple. Of course, we put some improvements on the car, but we understood our car a little better where we wanted to perform better. Every weekend, we try to achieve it. Some weekends, it’s better than others, but, in general, it has been much easier in the last weekends compared to before those races,” he explained.

Verstappen added 23 points to Piastri during the weekend in Austin, after securing the victory in both the sprint race and the Grand Prix. To have a chance of winning his fifth world title at the end of the year, Verstappen emphasized the need to make the most of every opportunity in the remaining five races. “I know we need to be perfect until the end to have a chance, so that’s what we need to focus on,” he added. “I don’t know, as I said before, it’s super close, and attention to detail will make the difference. Trying to get the best setup on the weekend and then trying not to make mistakes. That’s what we’ll all try to do.”
