ZANDVOORT, Netherlands – Max Verstappen has clarified that his Formula 1 future for 2026 was always clearer than was publicly speculated. The four-time world champion confirmed before the summer break that he would continue with Red Bull, dispelling doubts about a possible move to Mercedes, where Toto Wolff had expressed his interest. Much of the rumors about Verstappen’s departure were based on a clause in his contract that was ultimately not activated, due to his position in the championship. Verstappen, who has a contract until 2028, assured that he never had doubts about where he would be.

For me it was very, very simple anyway. I just say what I want to say. And I was never stressed about it at all because… of course, naturally, you always want to win. But at the same time, you just work on the performance.

He added that he is a relaxed person and does not worry excessively about these situations. For him, talking or listening to offers was under control.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff had expressed his interest in signing Verstappen, and even the conversations about the extension of George Russell’s contract were paused. Social media lit up during the summer break with photos of Wolff and Verstappen on the same yacht. Verstappen explained that there is no secret in spending time with Wolff, they even shared lunch and that it is something normal. He highlighted that they have a good relationship outside of the competition. Mercedes is expected to continue with its current lineup, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, for 2026.
