Fred Vasseur Asks Lewis Hamilton for Calm After Criticism

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has urged Lewis Hamilton to “calm down” after the seven-time world champion expressed his dissatisfaction with his current performance. Hamilton described his first season with Ferrari as the worst of his 19-year career, after the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where he qualified last. The 40-year-old driver also expressed his wish for the year to end, with two races remaining in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, and added that he is not looking forward to next season either.

I understand Lewis’ reaction right after the race. But he needs to calm down and focus on the next two races.

Vasseur added that, although Hamilton showed good pace in practice, starting from twentieth position is not the best way to get good results. “For now, we have to calm down. Jumping out of the car and making the first comments is always a bit exaggerated,” he commented.

Hamilton’s difficult debut season with Ferrari hit rock bottom in Las Vegas, where he set the slowest time in qualifying. Despite advancing to tenth position at the end of the race, and then moving up to eighth place after the disqualifications of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Hamilton crossed the finish line almost a minute behind the winner, Max Verstappen. Hamilton is 74 points behind his teammate Charles Leclerc in the drivers’ standings and is still waiting for his first podium with Ferrari. He has been outperformed by Leclerc in 17 of 22 appearances.

Ferrari has dropped to fourth place in the constructors’ championship. When asked if the Scuderia can overtake their former team Mercedes, who are 53 points ahead, to secure second place, a dejected Hamilton replied: “At this rate, with my performance, we have no [chance]. I’ve had 22 bad weekends [this season], so I anticipate a couple more.” Hamilton will be back in his Ferrari in Doha on Friday, where his compatriot Norris seeks to win his first world crown.
