Formula 1 driver Yuki Tsunoda will face a ten-place grid penalty at the Canadian Grand Prix. This sanction is due to an infraction during the practice session, specifically under a red flag.
The incident occurred when Tsunoda, at the wheel of his single-seater, overtook Oscar Piastri’s damaged vehicle during a red flag. Piastri had suffered damage to his car after grazing the famous “Wall of Champions”.
The red flag was deployed immediately after the Piastri incident, indicating the suspension of the session and the prohibition of overtaking. Despite this, Tsunoda made the maneuver.
According to the stewards’ report, Tsunoda argued that he overtook Piastri for fear of being hit by debris from the damaged car. At the time of the overtake, Tsunoda was traveling at 171 km/h, while Piastri was traveling at 86 km/h.Yuki Tsunoda partirá diez posiciones más atrás en la carrera del domingo. The stewards did not accept Tsunoda’s justification, pointing out that, although Piastri’s car showed evident damage, it was not traveling at a speed that prevented Tsunoda from maintaining a safe distance. They concluded that there was no valid reason for Tsunoda to make the overtake.
This penalty represents a setback for Tsunoda, who has struggled to achieve results since his promotion to Red Bull.
