Formula 1 driver Yuki Tsunoda suffered a spectacular accident during qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. His Red Bull single-seater hit the barriers at the Villeneuve chicane, resulting in an incident that required a medical evaluation.
Tsunoda, on his first flying lap of the qualifying session, lost control of his vehicle when taking too much of the curb in the first part of the chicane. At a speed close to 120 mph, the car lost the rear.
The situation did not allow for a significant reduction in speed, which caused a spin on the gravel and a hard impact against the barriers. The Red Bull was launched into the air before falling back onto its wheels in the gravel.
Despite the magnitude of the accident, Tsunoda got out of the car on his own. However, by protocol, he was taken to the medical center for a mandatory check-up.
The session was interrupted to repair the damaged barriers and the light panel used to indicate flags to the drivers.
Due to not setting a time in qualifying, Tsunoda will start from the last position on the grid on Sunday.
