Lance Stroll Sanctioned with Grid Penalty for the United States Grand Prix
Lance Stroll has been penalized with five grid positions for Sunday’s United States Grand Prix, after causing a collision with Esteban Ocon during Saturday’s sprint race. The incident occurred at Turn 1, when Stroll collided with Ocon in the final stages of the race, which was won by Max Verstappen and which ended under the safety car. The stewards determined that the Aston Martin driver was at fault, imposing a five-place grid penalty, regardless of his position in Sunday’s qualifying, as well as two penalty points, totaling seven in a 12-month period.
The incident brought out the second safety car of the 100 km race, after McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided at Turn 1 on the opening lap. The qualifying for Sunday’s race starts at 4 p.m. local time.“Car 18 attempted an overtake on the inside of car 31 at turn 1, but misjudged the braking point and collided with car 31”, according to the stewards’ report. “The stewards determine that the driver of car 18 is wholly to blame and apply a penalty accordingly”.
