Lance Stroll has been penalized with five grid positions for Sunday’s United States Grand Prix, due to an incident with Esteban Ocon during Saturday’s sprint race.
The crash occurred on the first corner, when Stroll hit Ocon, generating a chaotic race that Max Verstappen ultimately won.
The stewards determined that Stroll was responsible for the incident, imposing a grid penalty and two additional penalty points, totaling seven in a 12-month period.
The incident caused the second safety car of the 100 km race, after McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided on the first lap. The qualifying for Sunday’s race will start at 4 p.m. local time.“Car 18 attempted an overtake on the inside of car 31 at turn 1, but misjudged the braking point and collided with car 31”, according to the stewards’ report. “The stewards determine that the driver of car 18 is entirely at fault and apply a penalty accordingly.”
