Carlos Sainz Criticizes Formula 1 Television Coverage
Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has expressed his dissatisfaction with the way Formula 1 races are broadcast, pointing out an excessive focus on the reactions of the drivers’ partners and celebrities during crucial moments of the competition. Sainz, known for his performance on the track, lamented that his outstanding comeback in the Singapore Grand Prix, where he advanced from last place to tenth, was not adequately covered by the live broadcast. The race, which lacked excitement for many, also overlooked important moments. Another crucial moment that was downplayed in the coverage was Fernando Alonso’s attempt to catch Lewis Hamilton in the final laps. Instead of focusing on the action on the track, the broadcast mainly focused on the battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris for second place. Although television channels control their own coverage, the on-track images are directed by a single world feed, controlled by Formula 1. It’s common for live broadcasts to include cuts to the reactions of brides, family members, and celebrities in the garage, something that Sainz considers an outdated approach to showcasing the sport. The driver added that he understands that the production team wants to show a reaction if there is an overtake or a tense moment, but only if the competition is respected and the important moments of the race are shown. Sainz pointed out that the four or five overtakes he made at the end of the race were not shown, nor was Fernando Alonso’s pursuit of Lewis Hamilton, thus missing many key moments. Sainz suggested that Formula 1 needs to re-evaluate where the line between sport and spectacle lies.“It’s becoming a trend, which must have worked for them at the time, when people were interested in seeing our girlfriends, famous people on TV, the reactions”.

In addition, he mentioned the difficulty of moving around the paddock due to the large number of VIP personalities, which forces the drivers to use bicycles or scooters to get around. Formula 1 will continue with the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin on October 19.“The other thing is fine, but don’t lose sight of the main thing. For me, they go a little overboard showing celebrities and girlfriends”.
