George Russell: Ready for the World Championship Battle

After a remarkable victory at the Singapore Grand Prix last Sunday, Mercedes driver George Russell has expressed his confidence in being ready to compete for the Formula 1 world title. This triumph represents Russell’s fifth career victory and the second this season, following his success at the Canadian Grand Prix in June. The race took place on a circuit where Russell had an accident two years ago, while fighting for the victory in the last laps. The driver considers that his performance measured on Sunday is proof of his progress as a driver.

Russell added that, although he felt nervous before the race, he did not experience additional pressure. It felt like “another race” and he was confident in his chances of winning. He has reiterated his feeling of being prepared to fight for the championship and take the next step in his career.

Since joining Mercedes in 2022, Russell hasn’t had a car capable of competing for championships. In his three seasons as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate, he was only two points behind the seven-time champion and currently leads his rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli by 149 points after 18 races. The driver believes he has matured in the last two years and that he would make the most of a car capable of achieving consistent victories throughout a season. Russell explained that this maturity comes from experience, knowing how to maximize each situation. He acknowledged that a couple of years ago he drove with more tension, but now he feels much more relaxed.
