George Russell: Expectations and Contract Negotiations with Mercedes

Formula 1 driver George Russell has expressed his perspective on contract negotiations with Mercedes for the 2026 season. Russell, whose future with the team has been a topic of speculation, acknowledges that Mercedes “holds the cards” in these talks.

Russell’s contract situation has been in doubt, especially due to rumors about the possible arrival of Max Verstappen at Mercedes. However, after the confirmation that Verstappen will remain at Red Bull, a new agreement between Russell and Mercedes is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.

“They, ultimately, hold the cards due to the situation we find ourselves in with the management agreement,” Russell stated.

Russell, managed directly by Mercedes since 2017, has emphasized that he doesn’t feel pressure to secure his position, despite the speculations. “I have never feared losing my seat and that hasn’t even been on the table this year,” he stated. The driver also shared that, although a few months ago he felt more anxious about defining his situation, he now feels more confident. “I am performing better than ever, I feel I still have more to give,” added Russell, who prefers to focus on on-track performance.

Direct management by Mercedes has put Russell in an unusual situation. Although the agreement with the team has been fundamental to his career, the driver acknowledges that this has put him “at risk” during the last few months, while options with Verstappen were being explored. Russell also commented on the importance of his performance to secure his future in the team. “It’s my job to perform and reduce that risk,” he pointed out. In addition, the driver emphasized his desire to win, above any other consideration. Regarding the contract duration, Russell mentioned that they are considering what is best for both parties. “I want to win, that’s the only thing that matters to me,” he concluded.
