Piastri Feels Frustrated After the British Grand Prix
The championship leader, Oscar Piastri, expressed his frustration after the British Grand Prix, where he finished in second place. The McLaren driver, visibly affected, commented that the result did not reflect the performance he considered he deserved. Piastri, who started from second position on the grid, managed to overtake Max Verstappen on the ninth lap and led the race for several laps. Despite the safety car interruptions and heavy rain, he maintained the lead until the last ten laps. The crucial moment arrived when Piastri received a 10-second penalty for erratic braking during a restart after the safety car. This action, according to the stewards, violated Article 55.15 of the FIA sporting regulations, which prohibits maneuvers that could endanger other drivers. The penalty was served during a pit stop on lap 43, which relegated him behind his teammate, Lando Norris, who ultimately won the race. Piastri asked the team to swap positions, but McLaren decided not to.
After the race, a frustrated Piastri stated: “I’m not going to say much; I’ll get in trouble. Congratulations to Nico Hulkenberg, who finished third. I think that’s the highlight of the day, so I’ll leave it at that.” In a subsequent press conference, Piastri elaborated on his feelings, stating that he felt he had driven a very strong race and that the result was especially painful because it was not under his control. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella considered the penalty to be severe, but assured that they would review the data. Stella highlighted Piastri’s good performance and emphasized that there are still many opportunities in the season for the driver. Despite this result, Piastri maintains the lead in the championship, although his advantage over Norris was reduced to eight points after 12 races. Piastri has achieved five victories and nine podium finishes in ten races this season.“When you don’t get the result you think you deserve, it hurts,” Piastri commented.
