Piastri Describes Qualifying in Hungary As “Bizarre and Frustrating”

The driver Oscar Piastri expressed his bewilderment after the qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Charles Leclerc surprised by obtaining the pole position. Piastri, who had led the final practice, placed second, followed by Lando Norris in third position. Piastri, championship leader, was only 0.026 seconds behind Leclerc in Q3. Norris, for his part, had dominated the two practice sessions on Friday. Changing conditions, with clouds and wind, affected the cars’ performance in the final session. McLaren’s drivers were unable to improve their lap times.

It depends on where you’re sitting. If you’re where Charles is, fantastic. If you’re where I am, bizarre and a bit frustrating.

Piastri described his first lap as “terrible” because he pushed too hard, considering the wind direction from previous sessions. On his second lap, he tried to adjust his strategy, but the result was even worse. He acknowledged that the session was difficult for everyone and that he will need to analyze the data to understand the differences.
Charles Leclerc seized pole position ahead of the McLaren drivers, who set the pace all weekend.
Lando Norris, when asked about the session, agreed with Piastri’s opinion. He explained that Q2 was very good and he felt confident in improving, but in Q3 the performance was “doubtful.” Norris highlighted the impact of the wind on the car, which made driving difficult and affected lap times. Piastri, who achieved his first Formula 1 victory at last year’s Hungarian Grand Prix, hopes that his grid position will favor him in Sunday’s race. He feels confident and hopes to repeat the success of the previous year. Piastri also mentioned the possibility of rain, which could influence the race. He highlighted his team’s good pace over the weekend, but acknowledged Leclerc’s speed. Furthermore, he pointed out the difficulty of overtaking on this circuit.
