Sainz’s Opinion on Palou’s Potential in Formula 1

Carlos Sainz has expressed his opinion on the potential of Álex Palou, recent winner of the Indianapolis 500, to compete in Formula 1. Palou, three-time IndyCar champion, secured his first victory at the 500 Miles last weekend and seems on track to obtain his third consecutive title this year, with a 115-point lead over his closest competitor.

“[F1] doesn’t call me anymore,” Palou commented after his victory.

Palou has stated that Formula 1 is not in his current plans, and that he is becoming less and less interested in the idea, especially after his recent triumph in Indianapolis.

Palou, who spent most of his junior career competing in Europe, including participations in F1 support races like GP3 and Formula 2, joined IndyCar in 2020 and won the title a year later with Chip Ganassi Racing.

In 2022 and 2023, Palou tested for McLaren in F1, including an appearance in a Friday practice session at the 2022 United States Grand Prix.

Sainz, who competed in karting with Palou in his adolescence, believes that his Spanish compatriot has the necessary talent to compete in F1 if he so desired.

“I definitely believe it. I think someone who is capable of winning in Indy, the Indianapolis 500, should at least have the opportunity to show what they can do in Formula 1,” Sainz stated.

Sainz added that he has always valued Palou highly, highlighting his speed in karting. Furthermore, he expressed his admiration for what Palou is achieving in America, where dominating IndyCar requires a high level of skill.

Fernando Alonso, who participated in the Indianapolis 500 in 2017 and 2019, also showed his respect for Palou’s achievements in IndyCar.

“It’s great for Spain and it’s great for him to have the Indianapolis 500 after winning the series. He’s doing great there,” Alonso said. “I know that most drivers dream of Formula 1 and having a race here, but he had the opportunity in IndyCar and maximized it every day there.”

Alonso considers Palou a legend in IndyCar and believes he doesn’t need Formula 1, showing happiness for his success and following him with respect.
