Lando Norris: No Restrictions in the Fight for the Title

Lando Norris, McLaren driver, has expressed his satisfaction upon learning that the consequences imposed by his team have been eliminated, allowing him to fully focus on his challenge for the championship. Norris now feels in a “comfortable position” to compete. The unspecified “consequences” were imposed on Norris after an incident with his teammate, Oscar Piastri, in Singapore. This crash was repeated more dramatically in Austin, where Piastri collided with Nico Hülkenberg and, subsequently, with Norris, leaving both out of the race. Following a review of the incident, Piastri admitted some responsibility and it was decided to “wipe the slate clean”, eliminating the “consequences” for Norris.

“Better. Better for my interests,” Norris said. “I’m not sure relieved is the right word. Not that I was sweating before, but it gives me better opportunities in some places.”

Norris refused to detail the sporting sanctions, but admitted that his elimination will favor his performance in the championship. Initially, after the crash in Austin, Norris considered that Piastri was not guilty, although most experts thought otherwise. McLaren seeks to maintain fairness between its drivers, especially now that Max Verstappen has positioned himself as a direct competitor for the title. After Piastri won at Zandvoort, where Norris’s engine failed, Piastri had a 34-point lead over his teammate and a considerable lead over Verstappen. Verstappen has won three of the last four races, closing to within 40 points of the lead. Norris, for his part, has outperformed Piastri in all races since the reliability issue in the Netherlands, reducing the gap to just 14 points before the Mexican Grand Prix.

“I’m in a good position. I’m second. I probably prefer to be first, but I’m also in second place with nothing to lose,” added Norris. “I’m in a comfortable place. I’m also not a guy who believes in momentum. Every weekend is very different.”
