Mekies Remains Humble Despite Red Bull’s Resurgence

Red Bull’s boss, Laurent Mekies, persists in his stance of not taking credit for the notable improvement in the team’s performance under his direction. Max Verstappen, for his part, considers that Mekies is being “too modest”. Since Mekies took office in July, Red Bull’s performance has undergone a significant change. Verstappen achieved a podium finish at the Dutch Grand Prix after the summer break, followed by consecutive victories in Monza and Baku, and secured second position at the Singapore Grand Prix. After Verstappen’s victory in Monza in September, Mekies avoided answering questions about his impact since taking office. Three races later, his opinion hasn’t changed.

“It’s still zero, guys. It’s still zero,” he told reporters on Sunday night when asked if he would reconsider how much credit he can now take. “And I say that with the same seriousness that I told you after Monza.”

Mekies attributes the improvement in performance to the collective work of the team, analyzing the limitations of the car and seeking ways to optimize its potential. According to Mekies, teamwork, along with Verstappen’s clear instructions, is yielding positive results, confirming that the team has the best possible personnel.

“As a group, this confirms that we have the best people we could dream of. And we will keep working, we will not stop there. We will take it race by race and try to see if there is more to come.”

This shift in performance has led McLaren to consider Verstappen a real threat in the fight for the drivers’ title, despite being 63 points behind the leader with six races remaining. Verstappen has praised Mekies for his work, highlighting his pragmatic approach to car setup.

“I think Laurent is probably too nice in that sense,” Verstappen commented on Sunday night, referring to Mekies’ comments.

Max Verstappen
Verstappen highlights the importance of teamwork and the analysis of weaknesses, which has improved the car’s performance in recent races. The driver concludes that, thanks to the right questions and Mekies’ participation, the team is working well.
