Christian Horner could take on a leadership role at the Aston Martin Formula 1 team.
According to reports, Aston Martin is considering a change in its structure, which could involve the departure of the current team principal, Andy Cowell. Cowell, known for his work on the dominant Mercedes engine in the last decade, could move to oversee Aston Martin’s power unit project, which will begin a partnership with Honda from 2026.
Lawrence Stroll, owner of Aston Martin, has big ambitions to turn his team into a champion under the new Formula 1 regulations. This includes hiring designer Adrian Newey and building state-of-the-art facilities in Silverstone. It is understood that Horner is on the list of candidates to fill the leadership position. Other names mentioned include former McLaren boss Andreas Seidl, and current Sauber/Audi CEO Mattia Binotto, who was Ferrari boss between 2019 and 2023.
Horner recently agreed to a deal with Red Bull, which would allow him to return to Formula 1 in early 2026.
It is speculated that Horner would not return to F1 solely as a traditional team principal, but with financial backing as part of an investment deal.
A move to Aston Martin could reunite Horner with Newey, who left Red Bull in 2023 to join Aston Martin as technical director and co-owner of the team.
Horner and Newey played a key role in turning Red Bull into a dominant team in Formula 1.
A possible obstacle in Horner’s move to Aston Martin could be Lawrence Stroll’s desire to bring Max Verstappen to the team in the future.
