Hamilton Apologizes to Leclerc After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has expressed his intention to apologize to Charles Leclerc after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, due to a mistake on the last lap of the race. The situation arose when Hamilton failed to yield eighth position to his Ferrari teammate, as requested. Hamilton’s strategy put him on fresher tires in the final stretch of the race, and Leclerc was instructed to let him pass on lap 43 so that Hamilton could attack the cars ahead. When Hamilton couldn’t overtake Lando Norris to reach seventh place, he was instructed to let Leclerc regain the position on the last lap.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished the race in eighth and ninth place respectively.Hamilton’s race engineer, Ricardo Adami, communicated to him: “You can let Charles pass, he’s one and a half seconds behind you. This is the last lap. Behind him is Hadjar, two seconds away, Charles at 1.5 seconds. Let him pass.” Hamilton slowed down as he approached the finish line, but crossed 0.464 seconds ahead of Leclerc, securing eighth place.

In the end, I received the message very late. I was focused on the car in front, although there was a 0.001 percent chance of overtaking, I still had hope. Basically, I lifted off the gas on the straight and braked, but he didn’t take advantage of it by 0.4 seconds, so it was a miscalculation on my part, so I will apologize to Charles.

Leclerc, for his part, downplayed the incident, considering the positions at stake.

There are rules that we know we have to work with and today maybe they were not respected, but no… I mean, P8 and P9 or P9 and P8, that’s not something that really interests me. It’s more for the future that, obviously, if we are fighting for more interesting positions, which I hope is the case, I hope we work differently. But on a day like that, I don’t really care.

Hamilton, after starting the race from twelfth position on the grid, highlighted some positive aspects of the race in Baku, despite the final result. Hamilton highlighted that, despite the disappointment, he managed to move up from twelfth position and felt that his pace was generally good, being more comfortable in the car.
