Horner: McLaren sets an unattainable standard in Austria

Red Bull boss Christian Horner expressed his amazement at McLaren’s “truly impressive” pace at the Austrian Grand Prix, describing their performance as something no other team will be able to match this year. McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, dominated the race in Austria, staging an exciting battle for the victory. Norris led for the first 20 laps, with Piastri hot on his heels.

What is truly impressive, and for me I don’t see any other team capable of doing it, is to see how close Oscar can run behind Lando with a car full of fuel at the start of the race.

Horner highlighted McLaren’s ability to protect their tires and maintain exceptional balance. “I don’t really understand how they can follow so closely without wearing out the front or rear tires,” he commented.

Despite McLaren’s outstanding performance, Red Bull had a difficult weekend at their home race. Max Verstappen was eliminated from the competition on the first lap by Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, while Yuki Tsunoda struggled in the other car, finishing in sixteenth position. Horner lamented Red Bull’s bad luck, mentioning an unfortunate mistake by Kimi Antonelli that took Verstappen out of the race. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton took third and fourth place, respectively. Horner believes Verstappen would have competed for the podium if it weren’t for the incident. “I think we would have had the pace to compete with the Ferraris today,” he added. The Red Bull boss concluded by emphasizing the need to focus on each individual race, without thinking about the championships.
