The Fading Illusion: What’s Happening with Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari?
The arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari generated an unprecedented wave of enthusiasm. The presentation of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, along with his new teammate Charles Leclerc and team principal Frédéric Vasseur, was an event that promised the beginning of a new era. The expectation was high: the most decorated driver in the sport was joining the most emblematic team, eager to return to the top since 2008. The pre-season and the first races of 2025 seemed to confirm expectations. Hamilton, visibly motivated by the change, and Leclerc, showed palpable confidence. They even shared moments of camaraderie playing online chess. However, the initial euphoria has given way to disillusionment, as McLaren, and to a lesser extent Mercedes and Red Bull, have dominated the season. Hamilton’s victory in the China sprint race and a few podiums for Leclerc are Ferrari’s only achievements up to the summer break. Meanwhile, Mercedes and Red Bull, despite being behind in the standings, have achieved victories in Grand Prix races. The most worrying thing is Hamilton’s apparent dejection. His statements in Budapest, where he admitted to feeling “useless”, have marked a turning point. After being eliminated in Q1, the driver suggested that Ferrari might need to change drivers, a surprising comment for someone with a millionaire contract and an unparalleled track record. After finishing in 12th place, his mood did not improve. “There are many things going on in the background… that are not good,” he commented. When asked about the Dutch Grand Prix, he responded with a doubtful “I hope to return, yes.” Added to this is the proximity of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Ferrari’s home race, which adds pressure and expectation. The Hungarian Grand Prix highlighted the decline in Hamilton’s performance, who went on to express his frustration and disappointment.
