Lewis Hamilton Penalized with Grid Penalty for the Monza Grand Prix

British driver Lewis Hamilton has been penalized with five positions on the starting grid for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, this after a breach of the rules under yellow flags during the qualifying of the Dutch Grand Prix. The incident occurred when Hamilton did not sufficiently reduce speed under double yellow flags, at the entrance to the pits of the Zandvoort circuit. The authorities found that Hamilton did not reduce his speed as required in the double yellow flag zone.

Hamilton’s speed reduction was approximately 20 km/h compared to his speeds in the practice sessions, but it was not considered sufficient. The standard penalty for this infraction is ten grid positions, but it was reduced to five because the driver attempted to slow down and brake earlier. The decision was made after a disappointing afternoon for Hamilton in which he retired from the race on lap 23. Regarding another incident, Charles Leclerc, Hamilton’s teammate, escaped a penalty in Monza after the stewards deemed his collision with George Russell at the Dutch Grand Prix as a racing incident.
