Pierre Gasly Extends Contract with Alpine Until 2028

French driver Pierre Gasly has signed a contract extension to continue competing with the Alpine Formula 1 team until the year 2028. This agreement ensures the permanence of Gasly, who joined Alpine in 2023, at a crucial moment for the team. The news was announced before the Italian Grand Prix, a race that Gasly won in 2021 while driving for AlphaTauri. Alpine highlights that this agreement reinforces its confidence in Gasly as the key driver to lead the team in the new regulatory era that will begin in 2026, with significant changes in aerodynamics and engines.

The team has emphasized that the agreement underlines its view that Gasly is the “leading driver” of the team for the new regulatory cycle.

Gasly’s contract extension contrasts with the situation of his teammate, where stability is not assured. Franco Colapinto, who replaced Jack Doohan in Imola this year, still doesn’t have a guaranteed seat beyond this season. Despite Alpine being at the bottom of the standings, the team will switch to Mercedes engines next season and is optimistic about its return to competitiveness. In the announcement, Gasly highlighted the importance of Alpine’s CEO, Flavio Briatore, and Renault’s new CEO, François Provost.

Gasly expressed his enthusiasm for extending his commitment with Alpine:

“I am excited to commit my long-term future to Alpine. As a Frenchman, especially, driving for a French automotive company makes me feel very proud. Since I joined in 2023, I have always felt that this team is the right place for the future. Flavio’s support and trust in me, François’s commitment to the Formula One project, as well as the people we have in Enstone, made this a natural decision and I want to be here in the coming years and fulfill our joint objective: to win races and world championships. We are all in this together and I look forward to continuing this special story.”

Gasly is considered one of the best drivers in the midfield and a competitor who could aim for the championship in the right car. Alpine, which currently occupies the last positions in the championship, will use Mercedes engines next season and hopes to be more competitive with the new regulations. Alpine’s announcement also noted that Gasly’s performance on the track and his growing status in the Formula One paddock have constantly evolved, showing speed, consistency, and leadership. Briatore stated that Gasly will be the centerpiece of the team in the future.

“Since I returned to the team, I have always said how important it is to build and grow the competitiveness of the BWT Alpine Formula One team. We are well prepared for the new era of Formula One, which begins in 2026, and now we have our lead driver confirmed to take us forward. Pierre has been a great asset to the team during this challenging period. I have been very impressed by his attitude, dedication and talent and we look forward to continuing this project together for a long time.”

Flavio Briatore
The team has not yet decided who will be Gasly’s teammate for next season. Colapinto seems to have good chances, and the team also has Paul Aron in its youth ranks. Sources close to the team have indicated that Doohan is the least likely to be promoted in 2026, given his brief stint with the team earlier this season, although Briatore has admitted to having mismanaged the Australian’s time on the grid.
