Formula 1 Returns to Portugal in 2027 and 2028

Formula 1 will return to Portugal in 2027 and 2028, thanks to a new agreement with the Portimão circuit, located in the Algarve region. The circuit, with an extension of 2.891 miles, was built in 2008 and hosted two grand prizes during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. This happened after it was included in the calendar to cover the gaps created by travel restrictions worldwide. The new two-year agreement has been finalized by F1 with the Portuguese government, Turismo de Portugal and the promoter Parkalgar, Parques Tecnológicos e Desportivos, S.A. The 2027 race will replace the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, which will host the last race of its contract in 2026 and will not renew for 2027. The Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will also be in the last year of its contract next season.

I am delighted to see Portimão return to the Formula 1 calendar and that the sport continues to ignite the passion of our incredible Portuguese fans.

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of F1
Currently, F1 has a 24-race calendar, and most of its contracts with the circuits extend into the 2030s. A street race in Madrid is expected to be added to the calendar next year, while the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola will be removed. The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps will move to a rotating contract in 2027, meaning it will take place every two years until 2031, but the new agreement with Portimao is not part of that agreement. Several new grand prix are in the running to join the calendar in the coming years, including a Thailand Grand Prix, possibly as early as 2028, as well as candidates vying to fulfill F1’s long-standing desire to host a race on the African continent.
