Welcome to the 2026 Formula 1 Season!
The year 2025 is behind us, marking the end of the ground effect era (2022-2025) and giving way to new regulations that promise to revolutionize Formula 1. Will the new single-seaters alter the race order? Will this be the solution to Ferrari’s problems? Will Cadillac be able to debut on the right foot? At Alofoke Deportes we analyze the keys that will define the 2026 season. Will New Cars Improve Competition?
While the fight for the 2025 championship was intense, the on-track competition was not the best. Formula 1 is completely renewed in 2026, with radical changes in both aerodynamics and engines. The new cars will be shorter, thinner, lighter and more agile, seeking to improve the spectacle. The 18-inch Pirelli tires are maintained, but will be narrower. In addition, some elements are simplified, such as the ground effect tunnels, which will be replaced by flat bottoms and pontoons with larger openings. The front and rear wings will also be less complex. Changes in the engines convinced Red Bull to partner with Ford, Audi to join as a manufacturer by acquiring the Sauber team, and General Motors to promise that the Cadillac team will compete with engines manufactured in the United States by the end of the decade. However, there are concerns. The complexity is transferred to the driver inside the cockpit. The first tests in the simulator were not entirely enthusiastic. The management of power, aerodynamic modes, and energy recovery will be constant and demanding tasks. The wings, now with “active aero“, will allow drivers to adjust the flaps and angles, which will require constant communication with their teams. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) has been eliminated, replaced by a power boost in “Overtake” mode. An increase in radio communications is expected, which could define the first races of the season. Formula 1 explained all this in an eight-minute video, hinting at the complexity that could dominate the start of the new season.Who Will Dominate the Track?
The introduction of new rules seeks to reorganize the grid. The key question is whether Aston Martin will be able to join the group of leading teams, composed of Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari. Sources indicate that Mercedes trusts its engine program. If Mercedes leads, this would generate an interesting dynamic. McLaren, a Mercedes customer, has won consecutive constructors’ titles, which would be an image problem for the German manufacturer. Mercedes also supplies engines to Williams and Alpine, who could improve if the predictions are met. Expectations are lower for new teams. Audi could face challenges with its engine program, although it was already showing progress in the Sauber project. Red Bull’s new engine project, in collaboration with Ford, is also an unknown. Ferrari, as always, will garner attention, having focused its efforts on 2026 before most. The pressure on the Italian team to compete for the title will be enormous. Will Ferrari Be Able to Retain Leclerc?
Charles Leclerc stated that the first races of 2026 will be key to deciding his future, a clear message for Ferrari. After years of frustration, the cracks in his patience are evident. Leclerc, who came to Ferrari from a young age, has become the face of the team, but also symbolizes the continuous frustration. The Monegasque driver could find attractive offers if he decided to leave.
What Will Happen to the “Papaya Rules” at McLaren?
After a dream 2025, the dynamics at McLaren are different. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, now with a world title for Norris, will start the season with an unequal status. The team will try to maintain a fair fight between their drivers, which could be crucial. Piastri admitted that the Monza incident, when he let Norris pass, affected him. If Piastri maintains his progress and learns from the mistakes that prevented him from winning the championship, he will be in a position to fight for the title. Norris, with doubts despite his success, could consolidate his position. If Norris improves his performance and corrects errors, the discussion about the “papaya rules” could be irrelevant. How Will Cadillac Perform as a New F1 Team?
The new Cadillac Formula 1 team, with Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, will join in 2026. It’s a historic moment, the first new team under Liberty Media. F1 has changed since Haas’ debut in 2016. Cadillac, which will reveal its team’s livery in a Super Bowl ad, must keep expectations low.
Will Aston Martin Meet Expectations?
After being labeled as “the team of the future”, Aston Martin must convert the large investments into results. Lawrence Stroll has invested heavily for this rule cycle, with the aim of turning his team into a world champion. They have signed Adrian Newey, the best F1 car designer, have an exclusive partnership with Honda, and new facilities. If Aston Martin delivers the car, they have the driver for the rest. Fernando Alonso, two-time world champion, is more motivated than ever. Aston Martin has been difficult to understand recently. Following Newey’s arrival, Andy Cowell was moved to a position overseeing the integration of the Honda engine. Newey took over as team principal, a strange appointment for a man whose legend is based on his prowess as a car designer and not as a team leader. Cowell, who oversaw Mercedes’ dominant engine department in the 2010s, might have found the right place, but Aston Martin has lacked stability and a coherent vision behind the scenes for a while. Since it wasn’t anywhere in the previous regulation cycle, Aston Martin was able to hide from public opinion to a large extent, that ends this year. Given the work that has been done on this project to this point, failure is not an option.

Will Hamilton Be Able to Reverse the Situation at Ferrari?
Ferrari’s problems in 2026 are twofold: Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. After the great expectation of 2025, Hamilton’s debut season at Ferrari was a disaster. He often seemed ordinary compared to Leclerc, and his defeatist tone at the end of the year further soured the feeling surrounding his first year in red. Looking ahead to the new year, it’s fair to wonder if he can turn the situation around and what he would do if things simply didn’t work out once 2026 begins. Hamilton should have some flexibility here. He said from the start that 2025 would be a foundational year for 2026, although no one could have predicted how badly it would go. His aversion to ground effect cars was well known and the new generation might be to his liking, but the difficulties of last season mean he starts on the wrong foot. A bad start at the beginning of the year would only increase the pressure on him and Ferrari, who could quickly begin to regret it (if they don’t already). Leclerc’s own future could dictate Hamilton’s; it’s hard to imagine the Scuderia letting him go if Leclerc also leaves at the end of 2026. Even then, the product of the academy Oliver Bearman seems like a budding superstar at Haas. How Long Will Verstappen Stay in F1?
Max Verstappen has not hidden that he would leave F1 if he stopped enjoying it. At the beginning of last year, it seemed that he might be close to that moment, but a GT race mid-season at Nürburgring and his legendary turnaround in the second half of the year seemed to give him a new boost. There are two points to consider here. One is that, if Verstappen doesn’t like the new cars, it’s not hard to imagine him simply leaving to do something else; he loves sports car racing and has not hidden his desire to compete in events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the future. He doesn’t have much more to prove in Formula 1. And two, Red Bull’s strength could influence the decision on what his immediate future will be. The team seemed to be in full implosion last year, especially when team boss Christian Horner was dismissed in July, but the late resurgence will have given everyone at Red Bull reason for optimism. However, Red Bull’s internal engine program is a big question mark, and if that’s a complete failure, he could look for other options on the grid.
If the Red Bull program doesn’t work and he hates the new cars, F1 could run the risk of losing the most talented driver of the modern era on the grid.
