Alonso: "Top 10 Mandatory" for Aston Martin, After Spanish GP

Fernando Alonso expressed his relief after scoring points again, but emphasized the need for Aston Martin to stay in the top 10.

Spanish driver Fernando Alonso, after finishing ninth in the Spanish Grand Prix, admitted that scoring points was a relief. However, he emphasized the importance of Aston Martin achieving consistent results within the top ten positions.

After eight races without scoring points, Alonso managed to enter the points zone in his homeland.

Alonso’s teammate, Lance Stroll, had achieved sixth and ninth place in the first two races, but the team had not been in the top ten since then.

Aston Martin is ninth in the championship, tied in points with Sauber and five points ahead of Alpine.

It’s good to take some pressure off everyone’s shoulders in the team and try to be consistent in Q3. We need to score points every weekend or every other weekend, so we must raise the level.

Alonso highlighted the need to regularly score points. Furthermore, he pointed out that Sauber’s performance, which has accumulated a significant number of points, makes it even more imperative for Aston Martin to raise its level. Aston Martin’s long-term project generates high expectations, with significant investments in facilities and personnel to turn the team into a championship contender under the new 2026 regulations.

The most notable signing has been that of the legendary F1 car designer, Adrian Newey, who officially began working at the beginning of this year.

Despite growing expectations for 2026 and beyond, the atmosphere surrounding the current campaign had been less enthusiastic.

Alonso’s timely points haul was doubly important for Aston Martin, as his teammate, Stroll, retired from the race after qualifying due to pain in his hand and wrist.

Alonso’s eight races without scoring points represented his worst start to a season since his debut season in 2001 with Minardi and his 2015 season with McLaren.
