Fernando Alonso Considers Retirement in 2026: Last Season?

The renowned Spanish driver, Fernando Alonso, has revealed his plans to consider retiring from Formula 1 at the end of the 2026 season. At 44 years old, the two-time world champion is evaluating the possibility of hanging up his helmet, depending on the performance demonstrated by his team, Aston Martin. Alonso, who hasn’t achieved a victory since 2013, focuses his hopes on the new regulations that will come into effect next year. His team, Aston Martin, has made significant investments in its factory and has hired the prestigious designer Adrian Newey to lead the development of the single-seater under the new regulations.

It depends on the feeling I have next year, how I feel physically and mentally. But I don’t know. Now I don’t have a clear idea. If the car is good, there is a high probability that it will be my last year.

The Spanish driver has indicated that an outstanding performance in 2026 could be the decisive factor for his retirement, while a less successful season could extend his career in the premier category. Alonso has also mentioned that Aston Martin’s success could be more likely in 2027 or 2028, once the team has consolidated its structure with the arrival of Adrian Newey and other key professionals. He does not rule out the possibility of staying with the team if the 2026 results do not meet his expectations. The two-time world champion, who won his titles in 2005 and 2006, has made it clear that he will not continue in F1 if he feels he is no longer performing at the highest level.

It won’t be for lack of competitiveness. When I leave Formula 1, I want to leave as I am now, considering myself the best. And that people outside, at least 30 or 40 percent, still consider me the best.

Fernando Alonso
The Spanish driver will seek to enjoy next season and will evaluate his future year after year, with the aim of leaving the competition at its highest point.
