Alonso sees Newey’s appointment as a logical step for Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso believes that the appointment of Adrian Newey as team principal of Aston Martin is the “logical step” in the team’s quest to become world champions in the future. On Wednesday, Aston Martin announced the new role for the F1 design legend, who will join from Red Bull at the beginning of 2025 as a shareholder and technical administrative partner. This leadership change meant that former team boss Andy Cowell, who oversaw Mercedes’ dominant engine program in the 2010s, moved to a role more focused on power units, overseeing the upcoming partnership with Honda. The arrival of Newey comes after a disappointing season: Aston Martin currently occupies eighth place in the championship, despite the enormous investment of owner Lawrence Stroll in a new factory and a dream team of technical talent behind the scenes. Alonso stated that the leadership change made sense given the team’s ambition.Alonso added that, with this reorganization, the team is in good hands for 2026. Newey, known for having built more title-winning F1 cars than anyone, is recognized for seeking the opinion of his drivers on each new project. The two-time world champion believes his personality and approach will fit perfectly. It’s good news. I was already managing the technical development of the car, but also the team, supervising the people who were needed and taking care of the areas we needed to reinforce and others that were less important. So, in a way, I was already doing a lot of internal management. And Andy was also doing a lot of management on the engine side and the integration of the engine to the chassis.

Newey will become the third boss of Aston Martin in as many seasons. Alonso said that the leadership rotation is natural given the project the team has embarked on. With a new factory completed and a wind tunnel, the team is making small adjustments to be as efficient as possible. With Adrian, there is only one style, which is performance. There is only the unlimited search for performance and perfection.
