Cameron Green: The New Australian Cricket Promise Ready for His Debut

The 21-year-old allrounder Cameron Green, originally from Western Australia, is ready to make his debut with the Australian national team at the Adelaide Oval. His first appearance is one of the most anticipated in recent times. Let’s get to know a little more about him.

Professional Career

In first-class cricket, Green has demonstrated outstanding performance. He has achieved five centuries in 21 matches, including a career-high of 197 runs earlier this season against New South Wales. His batting average is 55.04. A standout match was against Queensland at the Gabba in November 2019, where he showcased his potential with the bat, scoring 87 and 121 runs not out. With the ball, he averages 21.72 with 33 wickets, including 5 for 24 in his first-class debut against Tasmania, against whom he also achieved his best figures of 6 for 30 in 2018. As for his one-day career, although he debuted a couple of weeks ago, he has only played nine matches in total.

Great Expectations

Expectations for Green are high. Greg Chappell has described him as the “best since Ricky Ponting” in recent interviews. Chappell included him in the test team at number 6.

“For me, Cameron Green is the next Australian cricket superstar,” Chappell said. “He’s a real prospect with the bat and ball, but I think his future is as a batsman who can offer some overs of quality. Cameron is a batsman with exceptional talent. At 6 feet 7 inches, he could become something very special.”

Recent Injury Scare

Green suffered a blow to the head from a hit by Jasprit Bumrah at the SCG. Although he was withdrawn from the match due to concussion and underwent tests, fortunately he did not suffer significant damage and it seems that he will be able to debut.

Is Australia’s Dream Allrounder?

Green has been limited in his releases due to a stress fracture in his back that he suffered last year. This season, he has not bowled more than eight overs in a match day. However, he has shown his ability to take wickets. Tim Paine suggested that bowling restrictions could be relaxed. “I think he’ll bowl a few more, once you’re selected in a test match, you’re ready. That said, we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs with the attack we have.”

An Early Debut?

In a way, yes. Recently, it seemed unlikely that he would be part of the team at the start of the series. However, injuries to Warner and Pucovksi have led to changes in the batting order, opening up a spot at number 6. Nevertheless, Green is deserving of his selection. Both Justin Langer and national selector Trevor Hohns have stated that he is worthy of being selected based on his batting alone.
