Cameron Green: The New Promise of Australian Cricket

The young all-rounder from Western Australia, 21-year-old Cameron Green, is set to debut for Australia at the Adelaide Oval. His anticipated debut has generated great excitement in the cricket world.

Highlighted Career

Green has demonstrated outstanding performance in first-class cricket. With five centuries in 21 matches, including a maximum of 197 runs this season against New South Wales, and a batting average of 55.04. A match against Queensland at the Gabba in November 2019, where he scored 87 and 121 not out, demonstrated his potential with the bat. His bowling average is 21.72 with 33 wickets, including 5 for 24 in his first-class debut against Tasmania.

Although his career in limited-overs matches is not as prominent, he debuted in ODIs a few weeks ago, but has only played a few matches, nine in List A and T20. It is with the red (and pink) ball where he is generating the most enthusiasm.

Great Expectations

Greg Chappell has called him “the best since Ricky Ponting.” Chappell included him in the test team at number 6.

“For me, Cameron Green is the next Australian cricket superstar. He’s a real prospect with the bat and ball, but I think his future is as a batsman who can offer some quality overs. Cameron is a batsman with exceptional talent. At 6 feet 7 inches, he could become something very special. I would put him at number 6 to start, but I think number 4 is his long-term position. The sooner he plays at this level, the sooner he will become the player he should be.”

The Concern About the Injury

A worrying moment was when he received a blow to the head from a Jasprit Bumrah delivery. He was retired from the match due to concussion, but tests did not reveal any fractures. Fortunately, the blow did not cause major damage, and it seems he will comply with Cricket Australia’s protocols to be able to debut.

The Dream Off-Roader?

Green has been limited in his release due to a stress fracture in his back that he suffered last year. He has worked on his action with WA bowling coach Matt Mason and has been limited to four-over spells. Still, he has shown his ability to take wickets, and Tim Paine suggests that the bowling restrictions will be eased.

An Anticipated Debut

His debut has come sooner than expected. Warner and Pucovksi’s injuries have caused changes in the batting order, creating an opportunity for Green at number 6. The selectors have indicated that he is worthy of selection solely for his batting.
