Cameron Green: The New Promise of Australian Cricket Ready for Debut

The 21-year-old all-rounder, Cameron Green, originally from Western Australia, is about to make his debut with the Australian national team at the Adelaide Oval. His arrival generates great expectation, being considered one of the most anticipated debuts in the world of cricket.

Highlighted Career

Green’s first-class cricket career has been remarkable. He has accumulated five centuries in 21 matches, including an impressive score of 197, his personal best, achieved earlier this season against New South Wales. His batting average is 55.04. A memorable encounter was against Queensland at the Gabba in November 2019, where he demonstrated his skill with the bat, scoring 87 and 121 runs not out, playing in positions 8 and 9. Regarding bowling, his average is 21.72 with 33 wickets, including an impressive 5/24 in his first-class debut against Tasmania, the team against which he also achieved his best mark of 6/30 in 2018. Although his career in white-ball formats does not stand out as much, his ODI debut a few weeks ago has generated interest.

Great Expectations

“For me, Cameron Green is the next Australian cricket superstar. He is a genuine prospect with the bat and ball, but I think his future is as a batsman who can offer some quality overs. Cameron is a batsman with uncommon talent. At 6 feet 7 inches, he could become something very special. I would put him to bat at number 6 to start, but I think number 4 is his long-term position. The sooner he plays at this level, the sooner he will become the player he should be.”

Greg Chappell has called him the “best since Ricky Ponting”.

Injury Concerns

A worrying moment was when Green was hit on the head by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah at the SCG. He had to leave the field and was replaced due to concussion. Fortunately, he did not suffer any major damage and it seems he will comply with the protocols to be able to debut.

The Dream All-rounder?

Green has been limited in his bowling due to a stress fracture in his back that he suffered last year. He has worked on his technique with WA bowling coach Matt Mason and has been limited to four-over spells. However, he has shown his ability to take wickets, including two in the second innings against the Indians at Drummoyne Oval. Tim Paine suggested that bowling restrictions could be eased. “I think he’ll bowl a few more than that, once you’re selected in a Test match, you’re ready to go. Having said that, we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs with the attack we have.”

Early Debut

In a way, yes. A few weeks ago, it seemed unlikely that he would be part of the starting team at the beginning of the series, despite having been named in the extended squad. However, injuries to Warner and Pucovksi have altered the plans, which has created an opportunity in the number 6 position for Green. This does not mean that he is not deserving; in fact, his current form places him among the top six batsmen in Australia.
