Cameron Green: The New Australian Cricket Promise Ready to Debut

Western Australia’s young all-rounder, Cameron Green, just 21 years old, is about to make his much-anticipated debut for Australia at the Adelaide Oval. His arrival has generated great expectation, being one of the most anticipated debuts in recent times. Here we tell you everything about this promising figure.

A Distinguished Career

In first-class cricket, Green has shown exceptional talent. With five centuries in 21 matches, including an impressive 197, his batting average is 55.04. Recently, he demonstrated his worth against the Indians, solidifying his reputation as a top-level batsman. His game against Queensland at the Gabba in November 2019, where he scored 87 and 121, demonstrated his versatility. With the ball, Green averages 21.72 with 33 wickets, including an impressive 5/24 in his debut against Tasmania. Although his career in white-ball formats is not as prominent, with only nine List A and T20 matches, it is with the red and pink ball where he has truly captured attention.

Great Expectations

Expectations for Green are high. Greg Chappell has called him “the best since Ricky Ponting.” In a hypothetical scenario where Australia played Test and T20I matches on the same day, Chappell selected him at number 6 for the Test team.

“For me, Cameron Green is the next Australian cricket superstar. He’s a real prospect with the bat and ball, but I think his future lies as a batsman who can offer some quality overs. Cameron is an exceptionally talented batsman. At 6 feet 7 inches, he could become something very special. I would put him at number 6 to start, but I think number 4 is his long-term position. The sooner he plays at this level, the sooner he will become the player he should be”.

The Concern Over the Recent Injury

A concerning moment occurred when Green was hit on the head by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah at the SCG. Fortunately, tests ruled out fractures and it appears he will be able to debut according to Cricket Australia protocols.

The Dream Off-Roader?

Green could be the all-rounder Australia has been looking for, albeit cautiously. Due to a stress fracture in his back last year, he has had restrictions on his bowling. This season, he has not bowled more than eight overs a day in match conditions. However, he has shown his ability to take wickets. Tim Paine suggested that the bowling restrictions will be eased. “I think he’ll bowl a few more, once you’re selected in a test match, you’re ready to play. That being said, we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs with the attack we have.”

An Early Debut?

In a way, yes. Warner and Pucovksi’s injuries have led to changes in the batting order, opening up a space at number 6. Despite this, Green has proven himself worthy of selection, with Justin Langer and national selector Trevor Hohns stating that he is worthy of selection based on his batting alone.
