Cameron Green: The New Australian Cricket Promise Ready for Debut

The 21-year-old all-rounder, Cameron Green, from Western Australia, is ready to debut with the Australian national team at the Adelaide Oval. His expected first appearance has generated great anticipation.

A Distinguished Cricket Career

Green’s first-class cricket career is impressive. He has scored five centuries in 21 matches, including a top score of 197 runs this season against New South Wales. His batting average is 55.04. In November 2019, in a match against Queensland, he demonstrated his potential with the bat, scoring 87 and 121 runs not out. This was also the last match in which he bowled for a year. With the ball, he has an average of 21.72 runs for his 33 wickets, including 5 for 24 in his first-class debut against Tasmania, a team against which he also achieved his best figures of 6 for 30 in 2018. Although his career in the white ball format is not as prominent, he recently made his ODI debut. However, this is based on a limited number of matches: nine in List A and T20. It is with the red and pink ball where he is generating the most enthusiasm.

Great Expectations for Green

Greg Chappell has called him “the best since Ricky Ponting” in recent interviews. Chappell selected him at number 6 in the test team. “For me, Cameron Green is the next Australian cricket superstar,” he stated.

He’s a genuine prospect with the bat and ball, but I think his future is as a batsman who can offer some quality overs. Cameron is an exceptionally talented batsman. At 6ft 7in, he could become something very special.

Greg Chappell
Chappell added that he would put him at number 6 to start, but that number 4 would be his long-term position.

Overcoming the Fear of Injury

A worrying moment was when Green was hit on the head by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. Fortunately, tests ruled out any fracture and it seems he will be able to debut.

The All-Terrain Vehicle Australia Needs?

Green has been limited in his releases due to a stress fracture in his back that he suffered last year. However, he has shown his ability to take wickets. Tim Paine suggested that the bowling restrictions will be relaxed. “I think he’ll bowl a bit more than that, once you’re selected in a test match, you’re ready to play. That said, we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs with the attack we have.”

An Anticipated Debut

In a way, yes. Warner and Pucovksi’s injuries have led Australia to reorganize the batting order, creating an opportunity at number 6. This doesn’t mean Green doesn’t deserve it. His current form puts him among Australia’s top six batsmen.
