Cameron Green: The New Promise of Australian Cricket Ready for Debut

The 21-year-old all-rounder, Cameron Green, from Western Australia, is about to make his debut with the Australian national team at the Adelaide Oval. His arrival is one of the most anticipated moments in the cricket world.

A Distinguished Career in World-Class Cricket

Green’s track record in first-class cricket is impressive. With five centuries in 21 matches, including a top score of 197 runs earlier this season against New South Wales, and a batting average of 55.04, Green has proven his worth. Recently, he played against India, and his performance has generated high expectations. In November 2019, in a match against Queensland at the Gabba, Green demonstrated his potential with the bat, scoring 87 and 121 runs not out, batting in positions 8 and 9. That was also the last match in which he bowled for a year. With the ball, he averages 21.72 runs for his 33 wickets, including 5 for 24 in his first-class debut against Tasmania, against whom he also achieved his best figures of 6 for 30 in 2018. While his white-ball cricket career doesn’t stand out as much, he made his ODI debut a couple of weeks ago, but has only participated in a handful of matches.

Great Expectations and Comparisons

For me, Cameron Green is the next Australian cricket superstar. He’s a real prospect with the bat and ball, but I think his future lies as a batsman who can offer some quality overs.

Greg Chappell
Greg Chappell has called him “the best since Ricky Ponting.” Green is expected to become a key figure for the Australian team. Standing at 6 feet 7 inches tall, he has the potential to be something very special.

Overcoming the Fear of Injury

A concerning moment was when Green was hit on the head by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah at the SCG. Fortunately, the injury did not cause significant damage and it seems he will be able to comply with Cricket Australia’s protocols for his debut.

The All-Terrain Vehicle That Australia Has Dreamed Of?

Green has been subject to bowling restrictions due to a stress fracture in his back that he suffered last year. This season, he has not bowled more than eight overs in a day in match conditions. However, he has shown his ability to take wickets, claiming two in the second innings against the Indians at Drummoyne Oval.

I think he’ll bowl a few more, once you’re selected in a test match, you’re ready to play. That being said, we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs with the attack we have.

Tim Paine
Green’s debut comes sooner than expected, due to injuries to Warner and Pucovksi, which has led Australia to reorganize the batting order and create an opportunity at number 6.
