Ben Whittaker will face German Benjamin Gavazi in his first fight after signing an agreement with Matchroom. Eddie Hearn, in exclusive statements, revealed that this situation was close to materializing three years ago. Whittaker (9-0-1, 6 KOs) will headline an event in his hometown of Birmingham on November 29. This will be the Olympic silver medalist’s first fight under Matchroom promotion, after starting his professional career with Boxxer, UK-based promoters, in 2022. Hearn explained that the 1.90-meter English boxer, with a significant presence on social media, was close to signing with Matchroom in 2022.
Hearn added:People don’t know that we agreed on a deal with Ben Whittaker when he turned professional. We prepared a big promotional session with him and filmed everything while we were finalizing the last details of the contract. Then, Boxxer showed up with a lot of money and outbid us at the last moment, when we had already filmed the promotion. I had never seen anything like that.

Hearn also noted:It’s a phenomenal signing for us. For two or three years we had to watch his career continue. I’ve seen his following and even my children, when I told them we had signed him, knew all about him.

Whittaker, 28 years old, last competed in April, where he stopped his English rival Liam Cameron in two rounds, after a technical draw against Cameron a year ago, when the fight was stopped after Whittaker’s injury when he fell out of the ring. It’s better than people think, he just needs to believe in himself and be active. I think he can win the light heavyweight world championship and, if he goes that far, it will be huge.
