Boxer Ben Whittaker demonstrated his power by achieving a stunning knockout in the first round against Benjamin Gavazi on Saturday, in his debut with Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn’s promoter. Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KOs) didn’t take long to impose his dominance in the ring. From the start, he used his left jab to punish Gavazi (19-2, 13 KOs), combining punches to the head and body. The Brit’s speed was a key factor. A powerful right hand from Whittaker, culminating an effective combination, sent the German pugilist to the canvas midway through the first round. Victory seemed inevitable. Whittaker, with a combination of left and right, sealed the triumph before many attendees at the event in Birmingham’s NEC could take their seats. Gavazi, although visibly affected, recovered and remained standing in the ring.

Whittaker’s entrance, accompanied by British artist Dizzee Rascal, ignited the audience. The 28-year-old boxer met expectations after his spectacular performance and achieved a stunning knockout against an experienced opponent in his first fight since April.

He was a tough guy [Gavazi], with 20 fights, he had only lost one. He came to change his life, but, as I said, I showed something special, and I proved why I am different.

Whittaker added:

Olympic medals are not won by jumping on one foot. I can do it all.

And he concluded:

When you enter so well, you have to back it up… And I did.
