Ben Whittaker achieved a stunning knockout victory in the first round against Benjamin Gavazi on Saturday, marking his debut with Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn’s promoter.
Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KOs) demonstrated his superiority from the start of the fight, using his left jab to control Gavazi (19-2, 13 KOs). The speed of the British boxer was a key factor.
Gavazi was knocked down by a powerful right hand from Whittaker, culminating an effective combination midway through the round. The situation became critical for the German boxer.
Whittaker, taking advantage of the situation, launched a left-handed shot followed by another right-handed shot that hit squarely, ending the fight before many could take their seats at the NEC in Birmingham.
Despite the impact, Gavazi recovered and appeared in good condition in the ring.Whittaker, accompanied by British artist Dizzee Rascal, generated enthusiasm with his entrance to the ring.
The 28-year-old boxer met expectations, achieving a resounding knockout against an experienced opponent, in his first fight since April.
He was a guy with a lot of desire [Gavazi], with 20 fights, he only lost one. He came to change his life, but as I said, I showed something special and proved why I am different,” Whittaker said in the ring after the fight.
