Ben Whittaker will face German Benjamin Gavazi in his first fight after signing with Matchroom, an agreement that, according to Eddie Hearn, was close to being finalized three years ago.

Whittaker Starts a New Phase

Whittaker (9-0-1, 6 KOs) will headline an event in his hometown of Birmingham on November 29. This will be his first fight under Matchroom promotion, after starting his professional career with Boxxer, UK-based promoters, in 2022. Hearn commented that the English boxer, 1.90 meters tall and with a large social media following (3.5 million), was very close to joining Matchroom in 2022.

People don’t know that we agreed a deal with Ben Whittaker when he turned professional.

Eddie Hearn
Hearn added:

We prepared a great promotional session with him and filmed everything, while we were finalizing the last details of the contract. Then Boxxer arrived with a large amount of money and outbid us at the last moment, after we had already filmed the promotion. I had never seen anything like that.

Eddie Hearn
Hearn expressed his enthusiasm for Whittaker’s incorporation:

He’s a phenomenal signing for us. For two or three years we had to watch how his career continued. I’ve seen his number of followers and even my children, when I told them we had signed him, knew everything about him.

Eddie Hearn
Hearn trusts in Whittaker’s potential:

It’s better than people think, he just needs to believe in himself and be active. I think he can win the light heavyweight world championship and, if he goes that far, it will be huge.

Whittaker, 28 years old and a light heavyweight, had his last fight in April, where he defeated his English rival Liam Cameron in two rounds, after a technical draw against the same opponent a year earlier, when the fight was stopped due to an injury to Whittaker.
