Olympic Boxing Champion, Lazizbek Mullojonov, Provisionally Suspended for Doping

The International Testing Agency (ITA) has announced the provisional suspension of the Olympic heavyweight champion, Lazizbek Mullojonov, after testing positive for a prohibited substance. The 26-year-old Uzbek boxer was subjected to an out-of-competition doping control on June 11, in which methasterone was detected. This is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid, known for promoting accelerated muscle growth, as well as increased strength and power.

“The athlete has been informed of the case and has the right to request the analysis of the B sample,” the ITA stated in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The ITA also explained that, if the analysis of sample B is requested and the results of sample A are confirmed, the case will be considered a confirmed violation of anti-doping rules. Likewise, if the analysis of sample B is not requested, the case will also be treated as a confirmed violation. The agency added that the athlete will have the opportunity to present their explanations about the results. Mullojonov also won a bronze medal in the heavyweight event at the 2023 IBA World Boxing Championships and a super heavyweight gold medal at the 2022 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships.
