Mike Tyson Supports the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act

The legendary former heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson, has expressed his support for the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act. This legislation, initially proposed by Congressman Brian Jack (R-Georgia) and Sharice Davids (D-Kansas), has the backing of UFC CEO Dana White and his boxing promoter Zuffa Boxing. The main objective of this law is to amend the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, established in 2000, in order to protect boxers from exploitation. The Revitalization Law has generated criticism within the boxing community, with accusations that White seeks to make changes so that his promoter Zuffa Boxing operates similarly to the UFC. In the latter, MMA fighters receive considerably lower salaries compared to their boxing counterparts, and White can maintain control over the promotion by implementing his own ranking system, sanctioning body, and world titles. Tyson, 58 years old, is a close friend of White.

Muhammad Ali has always been my hero, both inside and outside the ring. Supporting these revisions honors the spirit of the original Ali Act by closing the loopholes that have allowed some promoters to regain monopolistic control over boxers’ careers. This new legislation restores balance, allowing boxers to choose their own path while preserving the integrity of the sport. The Act does not alter the opportunities of those who are comfortable with the current system; it simply adds options for boxers who wish to pursue a different path that better suits their professional goals.

Tyson also highlighted that the Revitalization Act would provide greater protection and compensation for boxers. The requirement for mandatory medical insurance is equally crucial; no boxer should have to choose between paying medical bills and continuing their career. I’ve seen too many of my colleagues face that impossible decision. Representatives from Zuffa Boxing have maintained that the new law will not modify the language of the current Ali Act. Instead, it would implement and improve the existing law, which, according to them, would provide more opportunities for boxers in the long run. Congressman Jack declared:

I am honored to have the support of Mike Tyson, one of the greatest boxers of all time. Mike Tyson’s unprecedented success in the sport allowed him to transcend his achievements in the ring and become an American cultural phenomenon. Mike Tyson supports the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act because it protects boxers and offers more options and new professional opportunities for fighters to achieve the same level of success that he achieved.
